Top 40 classical Tamil songs

Welcome!

This blog is about the Movieland DVD release, Top 40 Classical Tamil songs. Overall, this DVD leaves out many great numbers (for example, "Rathiriyil", "Singaravelane" or "Ennavale"), but many of those selected are, by themselves, great! It is priced at Rs. 49, but its contents are worth many thousands that amount for the music connoisseur.

Here is a partial list of songs. Pls add you contributions below:

1. Maha Ganapathim (Sindhu Bhairavi)
Famous song. No percussion because the mridangam player is marginally drunk (in contrast with the hero, who, later in the movie, is always drunk).

Nattai ragam/Adi Talam

3. Kanna varuvaiya - Meera Kelkilaar (Manathil Uruthi Vendum)
Sounds like Gowrimanohari, but will hear again and change if required. Nice dance by Suhasini.
Yesudas and Vani Jayaram.

4. Kavithai Kelungal (Punnagai Mannan)
Beautiful composition in Rag Jog, adeptly rendered by Revathi.

6. Nila Kaaikirathu (Indira)
Softly beautiful song...No idea what the ragam is, but who cares...! Lovely...!

7. Azhagumalar (Vaidehi Kathirunthal)
Very intense song, the dance being by Revathi.

8. Sangathamizh (Sindhu Bhairavi)
Lots of nice dancing in this Balachander song.

9. Naadam Ezhunthathile (Gopura Vasaliley)
Nice song in Abhogi by S. Janaki. Some nice dancing in the hills (someone pls fill up here).

10. Achchil varta (Godfather)
Great song from ARR, with Ajith performing quite nice (if marginally constrained) Bharatnatyam.

11.Poo Malarthida (Tick Tick Tick)
Nice dance by Madhavi and Kamal. Raga Ataana.

12. Azhaithal (Jathi Malli)
Wonderful song, sung exuberantly by SPB. As in many other KB movies, the heroine is named after a Carnatic Raga (Sriranjani in this case, played beautifully by Khushboo). The movie is about a sulking wife (Khushboo) being drawn out by the husband (Mukesh) by singing Sriranjani with a deliberate shot of Shivaranjani, which provokes the sulking wife to come out of her shell...the duality between Sriranjani the ragam and Sriranjani the wife runs throughout the song.

13. Sippi Irukkatu (Varumain Niram Sigappu)
Kamal-Sridevi, Kamal singing lyrics for Srivdevi's tunes. Very Nice.

15. Enna samayalo (Unnale mudiyum thambi)
Another 'samayal' song, like Baala kanakamaya (Sagarasangamam), starting off nicely with Mohanam, becoming a bit obscure later...

21. Mari mari (Sindhubhairavi)
The original song, composed by Tyagaraja is in Kamboji, but Ilaiyaraja re-composed it in Saramati/Margahindolam. Beautiful if a bit elitist.

25. Poo-malai (Sindhuvhairavi)
Wonderful song set to Kanada (although a minority claims that this is Darbari Kanada because of the frequent use of sudha-dhaivatam).

33 & 36: Two songs from Apoorva Ragangal starring Sri Vidya and Kamalahasan.
I can't resist this aside: Apoorva Rangangal was a turning point in the life and career of Sri Vidya (and Kamalahasan). For SV (who did this movie when she was in her early 20s), her career soared, whereas in her personal life, she never recovered from the trauma that this movie caused. Her obsession with Kamal, rejection, a mother (yes, the great MLV) who allegedly blocked all her marriage proposals, an on-the-rebound marriage with a mercenary Assistant Producer (during which her mother turned up wearing a tattered sari in protest), a messy divorce that took a decade (she won her assets back) and her shift to Trivandrum, and her death from cancer (at 54), makes her a real-life tragedienne beyond compare...someone should make a movie on her...

To be fair to Kamal, he did make a trip to Trivandrum when she was on her deathbed and offered to fly her to anywhere round the world for treatment (it was, of course, too late by then).

Although in passing, I pay my tributes to Sri Vidya, a fine artiste, dancer and human being.

So far my favourite is nadam ezhundudadi (as long as I am listening and not watching!).

Sriranjani - Sivaranjani lyrics are nice.

Some sequence issue - mari mari played before enna samayalo. The lyrics for enna samayalo are quite funny. But then what do you expect when Manorama is around?

Where is sagara sangamam (forget what it's equivalent in tamil was - Sankarabharanam?)

Many of them stand out when the voice is good and not 'poi-thondai' (what is the Malayalam equivalent?)

This has collection of some of the best Ilaiyaraja songs, Sindhu Bhairavi is a class collection and so are songs from Tillana mohambal.

Ahana Sagara Sangamam is Salagai Oli, There is one whole site only for Ilaiyaraja's old songs that are really good,

Here is a site, where I am seriously trying to identify ragam's based on old movie songs, http://www.geocities.com/ilaiyaragam/

19) The song from Mahanathi is actually sung by that child artist herself (Shobana if i am wrong), Sriranga ranga nadam (it is not the Srirangam temple definitely).

17) Kizhaka pogum Rail was the first film of Radhika, you can see the difference between that and next song 18) Keladi kannmani, that is the movie with SPB, interesting movie,
